Bo Bengtson became involved in
Sighthounds as a teenager in 1959, first in Sweden and since 1980 in the U.S.
He has owned, bred and shown primarily Whippets, earlier also Greyhounds and
Afghan Hounds. His Bohem “kennel,” although never numbering more than a handful
of dogs, has accounted for at least 30 Best in Show winners at all-breed and
specialty shows and more than 120 champions in the U.S., Europe, Australia and
Asia.
Bo was approved to judge all Sighthounds by the FCI in 1976 and is now approved
to judge breeds in five groups and Best in Show. He was first approved by AKC
to judge Sighthounds in the late 1970s, and by the KC (U.K.) to award CCs in
Whippets, Greyhounds, Afghan Hounds, Salukis and Scottish Deerhounds, as well
as other breeds.
His judging appointments include Crufts and Westminster (twice each), the FCI
World Show (four times, most recently in 2009) and other major shows around the
world. He has judged more than 50 specialty shows for Sighthounds (Afghan
Hounds, Borzois, Greyhounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Pharaoh Hounds, Salukis,
Scottish Deerhounds, Whippets), as well as for a number of other breeds.
Bo is the author of several books, including the award-winning "The Whippet"
and "Best in Show - the World of Show Dogs and
Dog Shows."
From 1984 to 1997, Bo published
Sighthound
Review and was editor of The Afghan Hound Review. In 1997, in partnership
with Paul Lepiane, he founded the monthly Dogs in Review, now the world’s
leading dog-show publication. In 2003 the magazine was sold to BowTie Inc.
Bo was the recipient of the Swedish Kennel Club’s Hamilton plaquet for excellence
in breeding in 1982, the Swedish Whippet Club’s first award of merit in 1986,
the Dog Writers Association of America’s first Elsworth L. Howell
Award in 1994, the American Whippet Club’s Certificate of Achievement in 1997
and, most recently, the Association of Purebred Dog Writers’ 2009 Stonehenge
Award, presented to a person who has "contributed significantly to
dogdom."
